Former Radio 3 DJ Peter Johns has died. Radio 3 is the now known Power FM.
Johns died in the United Kingdom yesterday after suffering a stroke last year and has been in and out of hospital since then.
His former workmate at the Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation (ZBC), Eric Knight confirmed Johns’ death last night.
“Johns is no more, he had a stroke last year and he has been in and out of hospital,” he said. “He has not been himself for sometime.”
Johns, who referred to himself as “PJ Your DJ” and was known as “the Radio Driver” had relocated to the UK, after he left ZBC in 2002, where he pursued studies in digital radio broadcasting and packaging.
Before relocating to the UK, Johns had established himself as a popular radio DJ with programmes like Weekend Love, Mellow Madness and the ever popular Hitsville Top 20 countdown.
While in the UK, the Radio Driver continued as a club DJ, online radio broadcaster and host at many functions, especially those involving Zimbabweans in that country.
Joe Hussein, a former Radio 3 (now Power FM) DJ, tweeted that his former colleague, PJ, had been unwell for some time following a triple heart bypass several years ago.
PJ had been hospitalised since last November, Hussein tweeted.
He would suffer a series of strokes and undergo more heart procedures in the years that followed, making rare public appearances to fulfil bookings.
In the last four or five months, he completely disappeared from the entertainment scene,said one DJ who has performed alongside Johns in the UK. The last time they performed together he is said to have looked okay, but anyone could tell he was unwell. That was PJ, showbusiness was his calling and he always strove to honour a fixture with his fans.
