Harare, Zimbabwe (News of The South) – The Broadcasting Authority of Zimbabwe (BAZ) has issued a press statement emphasizing compliance with broadcasting laws, a move that comes days after a significant public outcry regarding an interview conducted by DJ Ollah. While welcomed by some as a step in the right direction, critics are questioning the BAZ’s response time and the absence of a direct mention of the controversial interview.
The BAZ statement, released recently, highlights its concern over the “growing prevalence of internet-based broadcasting of content that is inconsistent with Zimbabwe’s broadcasting regulations and standards.” It specifically references the Broadcasting Services Act [Chapter 12:06], Broadcasting Services (Licensing and Content) Regulations, 2004 [SI 185/2004], and Broadcasting Services (Code of Conduct for Broadcasters) Regulations, 2023 [SI 148/2023]. The authority stressed that these instruments “set the standards for responsible broadcasting, ensuring content upholds national values, respects individual rights, and contributes positively to societal development.”
The statement further reminds all broadcasters, whether traditional or digital, to familiarize themselves with the Code of Conduct for Broadcasters, and to ensure their content complies with the law. It explicitly states that “broadcasting via the internet does not equate exemption from responsible broadcasting,” and that “broadcasting platforms must not become vehicles for lawlessness, misinformation, or the erosion of core national values.”
However, the timing and content of the BAZ’s statement have drawn criticism. Many believe the press release is a direct, albeit indirect, response to the widespread condemnation of DJ Ollah’s interview with “Mai Jeremaya,” which sparked outrage for its perceived inappropriate and harmful content.
“While it’s good that BAZ is addressing this issue, their response time is far too slow if they are competent and know what they are doing,” commented one online observer. “An additional statement to specifically point out the DJ Ollah interview would have helped.”
Concerns also remain about DJ Ollah’s apparent lack of acknowledgment regarding his shortcomings and wrongdoing. Critics argue that without direct action and clear communication from the BAZ regarding this specific incident, those who support him or are unaware of broadcasting laws will never fully understand the gravity of what transpired.
“BAZ needs to toughen up and take necessary action, otherwise it’s being lenient to DJ Ollah,” a concerned citizen expressed. “It’s still important to address the DJ Ollah interview with Mai Jeremaya and take necessary action, especially because he does not acknowledge his shortcomings.”
The public and various stakeholders are now keenly watching to see if the BAZ will follow up its general statement with specific actions, particularly concerning incidents that have already generated significant public debate and perceived breaches of broadcasting ethics. The incident has reignited discussions about the scope of digital broadcasting regulation in Zimbabwe and the imperative for swift, decisive action by regulatory bodies to uphold content standards.
