HARARE, Zimbabwe (News of The South) – Zimbabwe government says the 2022 Population and Housing Census project requires about US$85.5 million as it starts resource mobilization.
The historical perspective of census taking in Zimbabwe starts with the first census that was conducted in 1962. At this point, the southern African nation adopted the Economic Commission for Africa conference of African Statisticians held in June 1961 to conduct the Population Census in 1962.
Second census was conducted in 1969. These two censuses lacked simultaneously and completeness. It was only in the 1982 census, which was also the first port-independence, that the whole population was enumerated at the same time.
The 1982 census was followed by three censuses in 1992, 2002 and 2012. The 1982 census showed that the population of Zimbabwe was about 7.6 million. This rose to 10.4 million persons in the 1992 Population Census, 11.6 million in 2002 and 13.1 million in 2012. A number of reports on these Population and Censuses have been published.
Zimbabwe government is maintaining a decennial census programme and the next census is thus planned for August 2022.
“The cost of the 2022 Population and Housing Census is expected to be covered by the government of Zimbabwe, however, it is likely that they will be a shortfall over the life span of this project, which is 5 years, hence the need to mobilize the additional resources required, for the 2022 Population and Housing Census project with an estimated cost of about US$85.5 million,” Finance and Economic Development Minister Mthuli Ncube said.
Previously, development partners contributed over US$12.6 million for the 2012 census, which was close to 30% of the total census budget.
