london. (News of The South) – The British government has announced that there shall be compulsory sex and relationship education in all England Schools.
Children from as young as 4-years will be educated about having safe and healthy relationships in all schools.
Sex education has been compulsory only in Council-run schools, but this new system will see all children taught at an appropriate age about sex.Guardians will have the freedom to withdraw their children from such education.
The age- appropriate lessons will have emphasis on what constitutes healthy relationships, as well as the dangers of setting, online pornography and sexual harassment.
In a statement, Education Secretary Justine Greening said:”The staturltory guidance for SRE was introduced in 2000 and is becoming increasingly outdated.
“It fails to address risk to children that have grown in prevalence over the last 17- years, including cyber bullying, setting and staying safe online.
“Schools will have flexible over how they deliver those subjects, so they can develop an integrated approach that is sensitive to the needs of the local community; and, as now, faith schools will continue to be able to teach in accordance with the tenets of their faith,” said the statement.
General secretary of school leaders’ union, Mr Russell Hobby concurred the development suggesting that age-appropriate SRE would make youths prepared for the challenges they face in life.
“It is so important for the young people to be taught about appropriate relationship, and the duties set out today bring that one step closer.”
This development come hard on the heels of a report from the Women and Equalities Committee showed that sexual hasrassement was on the rise in many schools across the U.K.
