Harare, Zimbabwe – A heated dispute has erupted between the royal Mbari clan, descendants of the former Harare Paramount Chief (King )Mbari, and the Harare City Council. This follows a letter from the council that the Mbari clan found disrespectful and dismissive of their concerns.
The Mbari clan, led by HRH Princess Eugene Majuru, asserts their right to question the council’s actions, citing their ancestral connection to the land. They emphasise that their royal status is inherent, a matter of bloodline and DNA, unaffected by the colonial dismantling of the traditional chieftainship.
“Our heritage is not something that can be erased,” stated Princess Majuru. “We are the descendants of the original rulers of this land, and we have a right to be heard.”
The clan argues that their concerns are distinct from those of ordinary residents, stemming from their deep-rooted connection to Harare, named after their ancestor King Mbari. They participate in resolving spiritual matters within the city, highlighting their unique role and responsibility.
This conflict raises important questions about the recognition of traditional authority and the rights of indigenous communities in modern governance. The Mbari clan’s challenge to the Harare City Council underscores the ongoing struggle to reconcile colonial legacies with the preservation of cultural heritage.
Below is the letter sent to Harare city council sent to them on 3 January, they ignored the letter and when follow up was made they claimed to have lost the letter, they were given another ine as satamped February 2025, no reply cane through and several follow ups were made until the recent letter from one of the cities engineers. The response was so shocking. Their response is attached below and a response to their letter is also attached.
