The fact that Africa lacks exceptional leadership has been reviewed when the annual African Leadership award again failed to find a winner since 2011.

We couldn’t find a leader of that excellence,” said Mrs Robinson, former President of Ireland who is also the board member of the foundation.

Africa Leadership Award is was put up by a British Sudanese Telecoms tycoon and billionaire Mo Ibrahim in a move to encourage better governance from the continent leaders.

In their report, the Ibrahim Prize for Achievement in African Leadership panellist said that, of all the studied candidates, no one qualified and hence no winner again for the special year 2013.

“The rules states that, the winner must be democratically elected, have left the offices three years back, served their correct term in office and demonstrated exceptional leadership,” reads the report.

Disputed second term election as well as corruption charges has cost former Kenyan president Mwaki Kibaki who has been under consideration for the award for serving two constitutional terms and retired in March.
Former President of Cape Verde, Rodrigues Pedro Pires was the last candidate to receive the award and the last two winners also were Festus Mogae of Botswana and Joachim Chisano of Mozambique while Nelson Mandela is an honorary laureate.

The African Leadership Award comes with a package of 3,2 million British pounds paid over ten years and then 130 ,000 a year paid for the rest of their lives which they should arrange to spend on philanthropic activities.
