As we usher in the new year, it is imperative for us as Africans to reflect on the journey of our continent and the challenges that lie ahead. For too long, Africa has been plagued by a deficit in true leadership. What we have in abundance are politicians—individuals who chase power for personal gain rather than the collective good. But what Africa needs now, more than ever, is leadership that is transformative, visionary, and rooted in the principles of Ubuntu.
True Leadership
True leaders serve their people with integrity, humility, and a genuine desire to uplift their nations. They do not seek to be served but to serve. They work to build resilient systems that reflect the unique histories, cultures, and aspirations of their people. In contrast, politicians are often driven by short-term gains, external influences, and the allure of foreign approval. This distinction is critical as we strive to decolonize Africa and reclaim our dignity as a continent.
Decolonizing Africa and Reclaiming Sovereignty
Today, African states are often reduced to mere pawns in multilateral institutions like the United Nations, the Commonwealth, and others. These institutions were not designed to serve Africa’s interests but to perpetuate a global order that prioritizes the dominance of the West and, increasingly, the East. While these platforms claim to promote cooperation and equality, the reality is that Africa remains marginalized, our voices diluted, and our sovereignty compromised.
The courage demonstrated by Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger in standing up against their former colonizer must be celebrated. These nations have shown that it is possible to reject neocolonial control and chart a path toward true independence. Their bold actions remind us that decolonization is not merely a historical process but an ongoing struggle for self-determination. It is long overdue for other African states to follow suit, rejecting external interference and prioritizing the needs and aspirations of their people.
Governance Rooted in Ubuntu
Our governance systems across the continent must be reimagined to reflect the African philosophy of Ubuntu—’I am because we are.’ This principle emphasizes interconnectedness, collective responsibility, and the prioritization of communal well-being. It is a stark contrast to the exploitative and individualistic systems imposed during colonial rule, which many of our governments still uphold today.
Governance in Africa should serve the interests of native African states first before catering to the demands of Western or Eastern powers. This means investing in homegrown industries, protecting our natural resources from exploitation, and ensuring that every policy and decision is guided by the question: How does this benefit the people of Africa?
A Call to Action
As we enter 2025, let this be a year of reckoning and renewal for Africa. Let us demand leaders who will stand firm against foreign exploitation and prioritize African unity, progress, and self-reliance. Let us hold accountable those who claim to represent us but instead serve external interests. And let us, as citizens, reject complacency and actively participate in the struggle for a better Africa.
The time is now to rise above the labels of ‘developing’ and ‘third world.’ Africa is rich in resources, talent, and spirit. With the right leadership, we can unlock our full potential and become the architects of our destiny.
To the people of Africa: may this new year bring us closer to the liberation and prosperity that our ancestors dreamed of and that future generations deserve.
Happy New Year, Africa. The journey to reclaim our continent continues.
