(News of the South) HARARE, Zimbabwe.- The Harare City Council said they plans are underway for the construction of a new wastewater treatment plant in Mabvuku in order to ease the load on the existing systems.
Speaking at a Water Conference convened by Water Alliance, acting Harare Water director Engineer Mabhena Moyo said the increase in Harare’s population required new treatment plants.
“Our treatment plants are currently overloaded and we need to build additional plants to ease the pressure,” Eng Moyo said.
“On average, 21 tonnes of sand are extracted from our wastewater treatment plants… The sand is blocking our reticulation system. We receive at least 120 complaints of sewer chokes every day.
“The treatment plants are also overloaded resulting in a deficit of 200 megalitres of unprocessed sewage in the system per day,” added Eng Moyo.
A few weeks ago Council and a local water purification dealer were embroiled in a dispute over a $500 000 mobile water treatment plant meant to provide water to Mabvuku, Tafara and nearby suburbs. script async=”” src=”//pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/js/adsbygoogle.js”>
