Harare, Zimbabwe. (News of The South) – Residents from Glen Norah and surrounding suburbs are now relying on Mukuvisi River as their main water source.

Water in their houses has not been coming out for quite a while. There has been a water tank that has been put in place for them to use but it only allows each family to come fetch water with two 20 litre buckets per day.

The water is enough for each and every household to drink, cook and do the dishes, wash, bath or any other things around the house that require the use of water. This then has led the people to resort to using water from the Mukuvisi River.

In an interview with News of The South, a lady who wished anonymity said: “Washing here in this river is not something that we just woke up and decided to start doing.

“As you can see, there is a plastic bag full of pampers that is flowing in the river and coming our side, no one wants the clothes they wear to be washed with dirty water.

“I stay in Hopely and water has not been coming out of our taps,” she said.
The lady went on to applaud the people who ensured that they get safe water to drink when the boreholes they drilled had run dry.

Asked how she gets home after doing her laundry she said that she hires someone who has a “chingoro” to take carry her laundry home.
On the other side of the bridge there was a man who had a very beautiful garden with green vegetables.

“I have seen that it is way better to come here and start a garden and sell the vegetables here.

“I once had a garden at home but my vegetables dried up a long time ago because they were not getting any water.

“Having a garden here is to my advantage because I am able to manage it here and also sell here,” he said.

If it was not for Mukuvisi River many families who do not have their own boreholes, and had been relying on community boreholes would have been suffering more than they are doing now.
