Biakato, DRC (News of The South) Last night Mai-Mai rebels attacked an Ebola treatment centre and killed three health workers and one resident. The rebels, also burned vehicles and buildings during the attack.
Health experts now fear that yesterday’s incident can cause the waning outbreak of the Ebola virus to again pick up momentum.
This is not the first time that health workers trying to contain the second worst Ebola outbreak in history have been targeted.
Several rebel groups are active in the region, and local officials say some believe Ebola is nothing but a political ploy.
Dr. Mustapha Hans Bateyi who is the regional coordinator said, “we condemn the attack against our team in Biakato by the local armed militias called Mai-Mai.”
Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, World Health Organization Director-General, said the attack hindered progress against the Ebola virus, “we are heartbroken that our worst fears have been realized.”
More than 3 100 Ebola cases have been confirmed since an outbreak was declared in August 2018 and more than 2 100 deaths recorded. Insecurity in the region is hampering efforts to contain the outbreak.
