Is Julius Malema Up For Chiding Jacob Zuma?
By Masimba Mukichi
I am reminded of the proverb of the white bearded, white headed, old man who lives in the village of my early childhood: Chaikuda kana chokusema zvinenge zvine chinodaro – When the one who once hero worshipped you turns the back on you, it becomes a thorny in the flesh. This proverb aptly sums the soured relationship in existence between Julius Malema, the Economic Freedom Fighter leader and the ANC leader, JacobZ uma. It is important to note that it was Julius Malema as an ANC Youth leader who campaigned tirelessly for Jacob Zuma to be on the helm of the ANC party and subsequently becoming the president of South Africa.
The verity of the matter at the moment is that the controversial Economic Freedom Fighter leader, Julius Malema seems to be drawing daggers at Jacob Zuma, the leader of the ANC party. In his trail of bullish and controversial utterances and decisions, Malema has left many people puzzled – they don’t know whether he is up for a good whack with Jacob Zuma or not?
The recent controversial move by Julius Malema, has left many people’s tongues wagging. According to SAPA, recently Julius Malema’s Economic Freedom Fighters party built a house for a woman and her orphaned grandchildren in Nkandla near President Jacob Zuma’s rural home. The house is just 300 metres from the fence of Jacob Zuma’s controversial homestead – to be precise the woman is Jacob Zuma’s neighbour. Commentators are tempted to comment that Julius Malema has done it to prove that, if the ANC government can’t provide a decent home to a woman and her orphaned grandchildren, Julius Malema and his party are prepared to shame the devil by constructing a decent house for this woman living in squalor, next door to the posh homestead of the president. It is a political statement going far and wide.
There’re also more traceable incidents where Julius Malema, the former ANC Youth leader, doesn’t see eye to eye with the sitting government particularly the person of Jacob Zuma. In recent years, Malema’s disciples are known to have burned T- shirts inscribed with pictures of Jacob Zuma. One wonders whether Jacob Zuma, the ANC leader is losing the glue to keep the party together.
According to the Sowetan, Julius Malema led students at the University of Johannesburg into song and dance to the song: Kill the Boer, they’re rapists. The song was later banned through the courts.
According to an eye witness news report Julius Malema, at a media conference said : “There is no system that has worked successfully for Africans, except the Zimbabwean system. The Zimbabweans today can be hungry and poor, but at least they own property. You’re eating pap and vleis here in South Africa, you have nothing to show as proof that you belong to South Africa.”
With the elections looming in South Africa, it is anyone‘s guess that maybe my question: Is Julius Malema up for chiding Jacob Zuma?- may start to get some comprehensiveanswers?
