Malawi – (News of The South) – Spouses and women serving in the Immigration Department from the northern region are continuing to provide girl child education support to a number of vulnerable children.
In the spirit of unity and socialisation ,the women welfare group thought of introducing a programme to render education support to 11 girls around the City of Mzuzu.
The education support programme started when the beneficiary girls were in primary school, and after successfully completing their primary education, some got selected to different government secondary schools to further their education.
Northern Region Immigration Public Relations Officer, Francis Chitambuli says the Immigration women have always supported the needy and this is one such a programme that cannot just pass without being noticed.
“The group comprises of spouses for immigration officers and female officers. Its funds are generated through monthly contributions and it was introduced in 2018. We know education is the key to success as it opens up someone’s mind to learn as well as practice what has been acquired,” Chitambuli said.
Though the initiative was introduced during the leadership of the then Northern Regional Immigration Officer, Assistant Commissioner Nelia Mkandawire, up to date it is still receiving support through the current Regional Immigration Officer Deputy Commissioner Maxwell Thokozani Makoko.
Commenting ;on the initiative Makoko said “It is imperative to promote education especially among girls as most of the them are at risk of dropping out of school due to lack of tuition fees hence supporting the programme”
Meanwhile, all the girls who are on the social support programme are now pursing their secondary education.
However, despite tremendous performance the girls portray at school, there are still some challenges like inadequate of basic needs such as books, school shoes, school bags and up keep funds hence an appeal to well wishers to also support the girls.
“Let us help one another in supporting these girls to realise their dream much as it is also the dream of the women group to see them finish their secondary school education successfully and upgrade their intelligence up to tertiary level,” said Chitambuli.
