Harare, Zimbabwe (News of the South)-French voters disillusioned with their own candidates have called for former US President Barack Obama to come and contest in their forthcoming elections.
The unprecedented move reportedly started as a joke according to media reports but has slowly gathered steam with an online petition garnering huge numbers.
The organisers of the petition currently have 42 000 signatures and want to reach a million before 15 March when they will present his candidacy.
The move has risen from a mass disenchantment with the local pool of politicians in France’s forthcoming presidential elections.
The obama2017.fr website explains the radical move as a lesson in democracy.
“The French are ready to make radical choices, and that’s just as well because we have a radical proposal to put forward”.
“At a time when France is poised to give the far right a massive score, we can still give the planet a lesson in democracy by electing a foreign French president”, it says.
Obama has been lauded as possessing the best CV in the world to take over from Hollande who is set to step down at the end of his term.
According to the media report Obama has repeatedly garned positive approval ratings in France averaging over 80 percent during his eight years as US president.
Obama exited the Oval Office this year with Donald Trump coming in as the new US president after beating pre-election favourite Hillary Clinton.
The French supporter’s move though is unlikely to translate into reality though it serves as a resonating rebuttal of the competing French candidates.
