Chitungwiza Tragedy: A Stark Reminder of Zimbabwe’s Perilous Roads
By HRH Princess Eugene Majuru, Princess of Harare
HARARE, Zimbabwe (News of The South) – The City of Harare is in mourning following the horrific road accident on Chitungwiza Road today, which claimed the lives of 17 people and left several others injured. The collision between a kombi (minibus taxi) and a haulage truck has sent shockwaves across the nation, once again highlighting the critical and often deadly state of Zimbabwe’s road infrastructure.
His Worship the Mayor, Cllr Jacob Mafume, councillors, and officials from the City of Harare expressed their profound sorrow, extending condolences to the bereaved families and wishing a speedy recovery to the injured. “It is indeed a heartbreaking tragedy of unimaginable proportions,” stated the City in an official release, emphasizing a commitment to deepen collaboration with Chitungwiza on road safety initiatives.
While investigations into the specific cause of this particular collision are ongoing, with reports suggesting the haulage truck veered into the oncoming lane after the driver lost control, the incident casts a glaring spotlight on a pervasive issue in Zimbabwe: the poor condition of its roads. For years, experts and citizens alike have pointed to dilapidated infrastructure as a significant contributing factor to the country’s alarmingly high road accident rates.
Zimbabwe’s road network, though extensive, is plagued by chronic underfunding and neglect. Many roads, particularly in and around urban centers and major highways, are characterized by severe potholes, crumbling edges, inadequate signage, and a general lack of proper maintenance. This deterioration forces drivers to navigate hazardous surfaces, often leading to sudden maneuvers, loss of control, and inevitably, collisions.
“The 90 percent backlog on road repairs, as reported by parliamentary committees, is a damning indictment of the state of our infrastructure,” noted a transport expert, who preferred to remain anonymous. “When drivers are constantly swerving to avoid craters or encountering unmarked hazards, even the most cautious individual is at risk. It creates an environment where accidents are not just possible, but often probable.”
The economic challenges facing Zimbabwe have undoubtedly impacted the government’s ability to adequately fund road maintenance and development. This has resulted in a vicious cycle where a rapidly increasing vehicle population, including many older and less roadworthy vehicles, puts further strain on an already failing infrastructure.
Beyond the physical state of the roads, poor road design, narrow lanes, sharp curves, and insufficient drainage systems also contribute to dangerous driving conditions. These inherent flaws in the infrastructure amplify the risks, especially when combined with other factors such as speeding, reckless driving, and defective vehicles.
The City of Harare’s statement acknowledged that “traffic safety is an ongoing concern for our residents” and called upon “government and authorities to tighten road traffic rules to avoid further loss of lives.” This call resonates deeply with many Zimbabweans who feel that while human error is often cited as the primary cause of accidents, the enabling environment for such errors – poorly maintained roads – is frequently overlooked.
The Chitungwiza tragedy serves as a solemn and painful reminder of the critical need for a comprehensive and sustained effort to address Zimbabwe’s road safety crisis. This must include not only stricter enforcement of traffic laws and increased public awareness campaigns by bodies like the Traffic Safety Council of Zimbabwe (TSCZ) but, crucially, a significant investment in rebuilding and maintaining the country’s perilous road network. Without safer roads, the devastating toll of accidents like the one witnessed on Chitungwiza Road will continue to mount, claiming more precious lives.
Emergency responders, including the Harare fire brigade and ambulance services, were lauded for their professionalism and selflessness in assisting at the scene. Their heroic efforts, however, cannot mask the urgent need for preventative measures to avert future catastrophes.
MAY THEIR SOULS REST IN ETERNAL PEACE.
