BANG FM a London radio station has banned the lyrics in Beyoncé’s new song Drunk In Love from their airwaves claiming it goes against their company ethos by “displaying promotion of domestic violence against women.”
Beyonce`s husband Jay Z, who features on the track alongside Beyonce, raps: “Eat the cake Anna Mae.”
The lyrics are from the film What’s Love Got To Do With It, the biopic of Tina Turner which catalogues her abusive relationship at the hands of ex husband Ike.
Severe domestic violence within the film are imitated by Jay Z.
BANG Media and Entertainment, CEO Jennifer Ogole said: “We believe that all people, regardless of age, gender, sexuality or race should have the right to an enjoyable listen to our station, without the promotion of such morals.”
The offending track is taken from Beyoncé’s recently-released self-titled album and shows the singer writhing semi-clad on a beach with Jay Z.
“BANG stands firm with their values, principles and passion for social justice. Respectful of what audiences want to hear on BANG Radio, Management believes this is the right action to take in regards to the controversial lyrics of the song and will continue to serve in social equality for people, through music and content on the station”
said spokesperson for Bang FM.
The station’s statement continued: “BANG Radio believes in the unity of women and music and in no way condones violence, domestic or otherwise, especially not through the power of music. The lyrics by Jay Z contradict BANG’s ethos and therefore, the decision has been made to wipe the stated lyrics from the song. ”
