Harare, Zimbabwe (News of the South) – The Government of China on Thursday donated $60 000 worth of food to the flood victims in Zimbabwe.


In March this year, President Robert Mugabe declared the floods that have ravaged southern parts of the country a state of disaster and have been pleading for assistance to alleviate the suffering of the flood victims.

Speaking at the handover ceremony held in the capital, Local Government Public Works and National Housing Minister Saviour Kasukuwere expressed his gratitude towards Chinese government and assured the nation that the donation will go a long way in assisting flood victims.




“May l express my sincere appreciation to the People’s Republic of China for heeding to our plea for assistance to alleviate suffering of our people from the unprecedented effects of flooding during the just ended rainfall season.

“I am very happy His Excellence today that China once again with their business community have come to extend to us $60 000 support to the vulnerable members of our society,” he said.

Kasukuwere said that when the Chinese people called to say we are coming I indeed knew china again would lift us our spirit and support us all the way.

Speaking at the same occasion, Chinese Ambassador to Zimbabwe Huang Ping said having learned about the about the flood disaster in Zimbabwe, they have responded quickly to lend a helping
hand.

Last month, the Chinese Government as part of their commitment to help the country in alleviating effects of flooding to the people donated $1 million in cash transfer.




“This time the Chinese Red Cross Society, Chinese Embassy in Zimbabwe and Chinese Community here we have donated $60 000 worth of sadza, salt biscuits sugar and other food for disaster-affected people,” Ping said.

Ping added that, “We trust the esteemed ministry will take swift action to hand out the food to people in flood-affected areas.”

Of the food stuffs that was donated there was 3800kg of salt, 3800litres of cooking oil, 7600kg of white sugar, 3800kg of roller meal and 3800kg of biscuits.

Over the past 10 years, China have been helping the country cope with the emergency need of food and played a pivotal role in providing 5 consignments of emergency humanitarian food aid to the country worth millions of dollars.
