Harare, Zimbabwe.
Zimbabwe’s largest mobile network provider Econet,’s EcoCash services remained intermittent or non-available yesterday, causing major business losses and much hardship.
The mobile company announced a 24-hour EcoCash system maintenance that was supposed to be confined to the off-peak weekend hours but up until now subscribers are battling to get a satisfactory service.
While it became possible for some clients to buy airtime and data yesterday, payment requests were still a problem, being recorded on the sender’s phone but not the receiver’s phone, and the supermarket short-cut systems were still down.
“Dear Customer, be advised of the planned EcoCash System upgrade from 9pm on 16 November to 9pm on 17 November. Service will be unavailable. Apologies for the inconvenience,” read the notification that was sent to its millions of subscribers.
Economist Langton Mabhanga criticised EcoCash for failing to inform customers adequately on the developments during the upgrade.
“The failure by EcoCash to contain the works within the scheduled time and the failure to communicate adequately amounted to corporate neglect to its subscribers, individuals and businesses who must have lost transactional time of their businesses.
“Furthermore, the warp might have throttled the collection of the intermediated money transfer tax. Businesses are often built by loyal customer support.
Ordinarily, customers would want to be kept abreast and recognised through sustained and proactive communication,” said the Economist.
Launched in 2011, EcoCash is a mobile payment solution which enables subscribers to make financial transactions, buy airtime and pay for goods using their cellphones.
