Zimbabweans have mixed feelings about the introduction of bond notes as use of the southern African nation`s currency. News of The South spoke to Zimbabwean Marcelina Chikasha who had this to say:

“I’m very concerned by all these demos that are currently taking place in our nation. Please watch who exactly is cheering you on and start asking yourself a lot of questions. There is no way you can say “no to bond notes”, without a viable alternative. The conversation should be why we need our own currency and how soon we can do that. We are missing the point that right now we are basically USD hostages. We can’t move, cough or breathe whilst using another nation`s currency especially one as strong as the American dollar”.

“We will always spend it faster than we can earn it and zero wealth will be created for this nation. It’s just not practical. What we need ASAP is a new trustworthy government and a return to using the Zimdollar or at the very worst we can adopt the rand as a stop gap measure”.

I think bond notes are not the answer but we need to start mapping a way out of this USD bondage as soon as yesterday. (Incidentally the USD in reality is only available to a privileged few. How many kumusha can say they have USD savings. How many of our youths can generate and save enough USDs to buy a house /car? How many can finance a start-up company? How much harder is to pay USD denominated school fees? )

“Besides being a stabilising factor, I daresay use of the USD has actually made the generality of Zimbabweans way poorer. Tatove varombo tichingobatirira mari isiri yedu. Ngati vhureyi maziso”. ‪#‎pamwechetetinokunda‬ ‪#‎ourunityisourvictory‬
