Harare, Zimbabwe (News of the South) – Zimbabwe on Tuesday joined the rest of
Africa in celebrating Mandela Day wth the Ministry of Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare and United Nations hosting a conference to mark the day in Harare.

The commemorations were held under the theme “Action against Poverty” emphasising the ability of everyone to change the world for the better.

In a speech read on her behalf by Principal Director Dr Erasers Gapare, Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare Minister Prince Mupfumira said the theme is a powerful reminder that in order to eradicate poverty, we all need to work together.

“I am excited by this year’s theme, which seeks to foster collaborative action against poverty for sustainable gains and equality amongst all, in particular the United Nations, Private sector, civil society and the Government.”

She said strategies have to be put in place in order to eradicate
poverty in Zimbabwe and Africa as a whole.

“The goal on ending poverty is still a long way from being achieved by any African country.”

“However strategies have to be put in place to reduce the number of people in extreme poverty and hunger.”

“In Zimbabwe, such strategies include zero hunger strategy, the food and Nutrition strategy ZIMASSET food and nutrition cluster priorities.”

In 2009, the United Nations General Assembly declared July 18 as an
annual international Nelson Mandela Day.

The Day recognizes and honors Mandela’s commitment to building a democratic society that is united, non-racial and prosperous.
