Despite Nelson Mandela`s discharge from hospital, Winnie Madikizela-Mandela has revealed sad information about South Africa`s former President that he is remains “quite ill” and unable to speak.
Winnie Mandela revealed that the 95-year-old was not on life support but he was no longer talking “because of all the tubes that are in his mouth to clear (fluid from) the lungs”.
“He can’t actually articulate anything” as a result, she told The Sunday Independent newspaper.
“He communicates with the face, you see. But the doctors have told us they hope to recover his voice.”
Mandela`s ex-wife told one of South Africa`s newspaper that Mandela’s room at his suburban home “is like an ICU ward,” because the old anti-apartheid leader “remains very sensitive to any germs.”
Mandela has been in intensive medical care at his Johannesburg home since being discharged on Sept 1 after nearly three months in a hospital for a recurring lung infection.
Mandela, who is South Africa`s first black President has faced numerous health scares in recent times.
Madikizela-Mandela’s comments come two weeks after African National Congress stalwart Tokyo Sexwale told the media Mandela did not consider himself ill.
“Madiba says of his health: ‘I am not ill, I’m just old,” Sexwale told reporters at the Nelson Mandela Foundation in Houghton at the time.
Earlier this year, Mandela spent almost three months in hospital for a recurring lung infection before being discharged on September 1 to continue treatment at home.
