As the June 30th deadline for Zimbabweans to leave South Africa arrives, thousands of families find themselves caught in a terrifying race against time. For many, this is no longer a matter of paperwork or changing immigration policies—it is quite literally a matter of survival.
With targeted, indiscriminate violence threatening the safety of black foreign nationals, a massive, frantic effort is underway to evacuate people by bus. But while getting across the border preserves life, the journey home is exposing returnees to severe hardship, financial ruin, and isolation.
To combat this, Zimbabwean human rights activist Todd has launched an urgent GoFundMe campaign to provide critical lifeline support where it is needed most.
The Reality on the Ground: Leaving with Nothing
For years, many Zimbabweans have lived, worked, and built lawful lives in South Africa. Now, forced to flee abruptly, many are escaping with nothing more than the clothes on their backs.
Those who have managed to pack up their essential household possessions—the hard-earned fruits of years of labor—face a devastating roadblock at the border. The Zimbabwe Revenue Authority (ZIMRA) is charging a staggering 40% import duty on goods. Unable to pay this sudden, exorbitant fee, many families are watching their life’s possessions get seized at the border, leaving them completely empty-handed.
Furthermore, while the Zimbabwean government and various charities have provided transport to major urban centers, the assistance ends there. Thousands of returnees do not come from major cities; their final destinations are distant rural villages and small towns. Without money for onward travel, they are left stranded at bus terminals with no way to reach their homes.
