Harare, Zimbabwe (News of The South) – Lecturers at the University of Zimbabwe (UZ) have launched a strike demanding better pay, citing current salaries that have significantly eroded their living standards. Junior lecturers are reportedly earning less than $250 USD per month, a drastic reduction from the $2,500 USD they earned prior to October 2018.
The Association of University Teachers (AUT) has declared the strike, emphasizing their legal right to picket and protest peacefully. The High Court recently issued an order barring police from interfering with the strike, allowing lecturers and their supporters to hold demonstrations, sing, dance, and hold solidarity speeches.
The striking lecturers are demanding a return to their previous salary levels, which they deem necessary to cope with the rising cost of living. They argue that the current low salaries are a “recipe for destruction” of the university.
The University of Zimbabwe has not yet commented on the strike.
