Two women were arrested  for robbery in the Hatfield area of Harare on Saturday morning following a speed chase by a suspecting driver.

Hatfield residents were left speechless after two young women from Mbare between the ages of 19 and 22 were caught and two of their male accomplices managed to flee from the angry mob that wanted to attack them.

According to eyewitnesses around 10am, the four member gang gave a lift to a woman who was hiking along Twentydales road in Hatfield and as they were travelling, a driver who was trailing behind the silver Toyota Ramjet suspicious of the vehicle which had no number plates  became suspicious.

“I became suspicious of the car that was in-front of me and the fleet of commuter omnibuses as well for they all did not have registration plates and seeing that they had given a lift to a woman I know I began chasing the vehicle”, said the driver who did not want to be identified.

It is believed that the commuter omnibuses managed to get away but because of the faulty engine on the Raum the four in the car had no option but to abandon the car and run for their lives.

However, the two young women jumped over a Dura-wall into a nearby yard where they were caught by residents who followed them. In the car was a bag of the illegal herb marijuana ‘mbanje’ and cell phones.

The younger woman admitted to giving people lifts in the Raum and robbing them of their cellphones and money then dumping them.

The police appeared at the scene about 30minutes after they were informed of the incident.

The rise of robberies in the capital has increased over the past year since the rise in the number of private car owners using their cars to ferry people from one place to another.

Zimbabwean police have  advised commuters to use public transport and not get into vehicles without registration plates to avoid putting their lives in danger.
