Reports have emerged detailing plans by the Trump administration to significantly reduce the United States’ diplomatic presence worldwide, with a notable focus on Africa. An internal State Department document reveals proposals to close nearly 30 embassies and consulates, with over half of those located on the African continent.
Countries such as Lesotho, Eritrea, the Central African Republic, the Republic of Congo, The Gambia, and South Sudan are among those where embassy closures are being considered. Additionally, consulates in South Africa and Cameroon are also reportedly targeted.
The proposed reductions are attributed to an administration-wide effort to streamline federal spending, with input from the Department of Government Efficiency. However, the potential consequences of these closures are raising concerns among foreign policy experts.
Critics argue that a diminished U.S. diplomatic presence in Africa could lead to a decline in American influence, creating a vacuum that other global powers may seek to fill. Furthermore, the closures could disrupt essential services for both American citizens and African nationals.
The situation remains fluid, and it is unclear whether Secretary of State Marco Rubio will ultimately approve the proposed changes.
