HARARE, Zimbabwe (News of The South) – A growing controversy surrounds prominent Zimbabwean politician Nelson Chamisa, as traditional spirit mediums have publicly declared their opposition to his potential leadership. Their stance, rooted in perceived disrespect for Zimbabwean spiritual traditions, has ignited a national debate about the role of culture and spirituality in politics.
The spirit mediums, influential figures in Zimbabwe’s traditional belief system, convened in 2023 to discuss Chamisa’s past statements. According to sources within the traditional leadership, Chamisa’s remarks were interpreted as dismissive of traditional practices. “They questioned why he would want to be leader of a country owned by spirit mediums,” stated a spokesperson close to the gathering, who requested anonymity. The spirit mediums are said to have said they had previously considered givibg Chamisa the chance to rule Zimbabwe but that would never happen because of his utterances.
The core of the dispute centers on Chamisa’s perceived emphasis on religious faith over traditional spirituality. Critics point to past speeches where he appeared to prioritize religious doctrines, seemingly overlooking the deep-seated cultural significance of ancestral veneration and spirit mediums in Zimbabwean society.

The spirit mediums and many other people met in Kariba constructed three anthill-like structures from maize meal, a staple food in the region. Notably, these structures remained untouched by insects or animals, a phenomenon interpreted by some as a significant spiritual sign.
The ritual, described as a covenant, is linked to the belief that “zvinodyiwa comes from soil” – what is eaten comes from the soil – emphasizing the connection between the land and sustenance. The event drew participants from both Zimbabwe and Zambia, reflecting the historical and cultural ties between the two nations, which predate colonial borders. Some Zambians reside in Zimbabwe and some Zimbabweans reside in Zambia.
Spiritual leaders, who played a role in the liberation struggle, established rules and laws that continue to hold significance for Zimbabwe.
The central figure in the controversy is Nelson Chamisa, a prominent political figure in Zimbabwe. Allegations have surfaced that spiritual leaders have declared Chamisa unfit to rule the country, citing his past remarks referring to them as “demons.” Further claims state that no political alliance, including a Government of National Unity (GNU), will result in Chamisa assuming power. It is also noted that Chamisa currently does not lead a political party. This incident has the historical importance of spiritual leaders in the nation’s liberation.
The ritual has also highlighted the enduring cultural and historical ties between Zimbabwe and Zambia, underscoring the shared heritage of communities straddling the modern border. The significance of maize meal as a symbol of sustenance and the earth’s bounty further emphasizes the spiritual dimension of the event.
“Our forefathers practiced tradition as well as religion. They prayed and communicated with the creator ‘Musikavanhu’ while at the same time practicing the tradition,” a traditional leader explained. “Both of these work hand in hand and can’t operate the other.”
The spirit mediums’ declaration carries significant weight in a country where traditional beliefs remain deeply ingrained. Their pronouncements have reportedly led Chamisa to reconsider his political ambitions, with sources suggesting he now recognizes the formidable opposition he faces.
This development has left many of Chamisa’s supporters in a state of uncertainty. While he continues to attract large crowds with his charismatic speeches, the spiritual leaders’ rejection casts a long shadow over his political future.
The controversy highlights a broader tension between modern politics and traditional values in Zimbabwe. As the nation grapples with economic and political challenges, the debate over Chamisa’s suitability for leadership underscores the enduring influence of traditional spirituality in shaping the country’s destiny.
“Time will tell for many to believe the power of Zimbabwe’s tradition and spirituality,” a traditional elder stated.
This situation has also renewed discussions about the separation of state and traditional practices, and the degree to which political leaders should acknowledge and respect the spiritual beliefs of the populace. Observers note that this episode serves as a powerful reminder of the enduring influence of traditional authorities in Zimbabwe’s political landscape.
Every country has its own tradition and culture so Zimbabweans cannot ignore Zimbabwean culture.
