Louisiana, USA. (News of The South) – South Africa’s petrochemicals giant, Sasol, said on Monday that there was an explosion at its US-based Lake Charles Chemicals Project (LCCP).
The petrochemicals company said the incident occurred at around midday at its Low-Density Polyethylene (LDPE) unit which forms part of the mega-Louisiana complex.
“The fire was extinguished and all employees and contractors are safe and accounted for, the unit has been shut down and an investigation is underway to determine the cause of the incident,” read a statement from Sasol.
Sasol said all other Lake Charles units and previously commissioned LCCP units, namely the ethane cracker, ethylene glycol/ethylene oxide and linear low-density polyethylene units, were unaffected and operating to plan.
The new LDPE unit had not yet achieved beneficial operation as planned for in December 2019. The LDPE unit was in the final stages of commissioning and startup when the incident occurred.
