0 0The Confederation of African Football (CAF) controls club competitions, continental and national tournaments in Africa. It was formed in 1957 and has had eight presidents so far. The confederation elected Ahmad Ahmad as its president in March 2017. FIFA gave him a five-year ban for financial misconduct in November 2020 and it led to Patrice Motsepe’s election as the president of CAF. Read on to learn more about him.
Motsepe’s Election As CAF President
Patrice Motsepe is former South African President Cyril Ramaphosa’s brother-in-law. Also, he was the first black African investor to appear in Forbes’ list of billionaires. FIFA president Gianni Infantino intervened in the African soccer presidential nomination and influenced Jacques Anouma, from Ivory Coast, Ahmed Yahya from Mauritania, and Augustin Senghor from Senegal to withdraw. Thus leaving Motsepe as the only candidate.
Infantino was present in the African soccer general assembly. Motsepe referred to the FIFA president as his brother and expressed his gratitude for encouraging unity and for the vision. The deal stated that Anouma, Yahya, Senghor, and Motsepe will work as a team while leading CAF. Even so, some soccer fans have criticized this move and Infantino’s interference in African soccer.
Infantino will defend his seat in 2023. Today, Africa has 54 countries that are registered FIFA members. So, the FIFA president needs to win the hearts of most African nations to increase his chances of retaining his seat. But, it is uncertain whether the CAF leadership will work in harmony, as Yahya and Senghor haven’t yet been appointed as the confederation’s vice presidents.
Today, there are three CAF vice presidents. Gamblers who engage in soccer betting at Betway have many betting options for the CAF Champions League. These include live bets, accumulators and single bets.
Rumors claim that Fatma Samoura, FIFA’s secretary-general will be chosen as CAF secretary-general according to the new deal. She attended CAF’s general assembly in the past. The latest Forbes report states that Motsepe is worth $2.9 billion. He is the president and owner of Mamelodi Sundowns, a South African soccer club.
The mining mogul has several high circles. For example, he once made a speech together with Barack Obama and attended last year’s international business leaders’ exclusive meeting that former U.S. President Donald Trump hosted at the World Economic Forum. Motsepe gave a brief speech after being confirmed as the new CAF president.
Ahmad Leaves CAF
Ahmad has a promising start at CAF. Unfortunately, he started facing various crises and left CAF in disgrace. FIFA’s interest in CAF’s finances increased during Ahmad’s tenure and the global soccer organization sent Fatma Samoura to Egypt for six years. Motsepe’s soccer club won the 2016 CAF Champions League. He urged African sports fans to remain united, as he will soon fix CAF.
Motsepe is the new president of the African soccer confederation. A 2019 forensic audit of the Confederation of African Football’s finances discovered many irregularities that caused Ahmad’s ban from African soccer in 2020 for financial misconduct. Fatma Samoura, FIFA’s secretary, took over CAF in 2019 and ran the federation for six months. Many soccer fans in Africa are optimistic that Motsepe will improve African soccer’s current financial position. This will encourage sportsbooks such as Betway to sponsor more clubs in the continent.
