A 31 year old Salvadorean nun Roxanna Rodriguez who claimed ignorance of her being pregnant gave birth to a baby boy in Italy after experiencing stomach cramps on Wednesday.
Rodriguez was rushed to hospital where a baby boy weighing 3.5kilogrammes (9 pounds) was delivered.
Other new mothers at Rieti hospital started collecting baby clothes and donations for the nun.
“I did not know I was pregnant. I only felt a stomach pain,” the nun was quoted as saying at the hospital.
Rodriguez is a member of a convent in Campomoro known as Little Disciples of Jesus, the convent is in charge of a home for the aged.
The baby was named Francesco (Francis) – also the pope’s chosen title and one of the most popular names in Italy, where St Francis of Assisi is the much-loved national patron saint.
Rodriguez said she was confused about the pregnancy as she had not indulged in sex.
“It’s not possible. I’m a nun,” she told the hospital.
Don Fabrizio Borello, a local pastor said he believed Rodriguez when she said she had no idea she was pregnant.
“I guess she’s telling the truth when she says she arrived at the hospital unaware of the pregnancy,” Borello said.
A spokesman for the local bishop, who apparently did not think the birth was an immaculate conception, said the nun was not to continue her duties after the incident.
“It would be preferable that she now lead a secular life with her baby, away from religious institutions,” he said.
