(News of The South) – Same sex couples banned from adopting in Hungary. The Hungarian parliament has approved a draft law that would effectively ban same sex adoption.
Hungarian lawmakers on Tuesday passed a law that bans same sex couples from adopting children with immediate effect.
Prime Minister Viktor Orban’s conservative government proposed the legislation earlier this year, and his Fidesz party has a two thirds majority in parliament.
The amendment that was approved on Tuesday defines family as based on marriage and the parent-child relation, thus, the mother is a woman and the father is a man.
Same sex couples will now be unable to adopt, even if one of them applies as a single person.
“The main rule is that only married couples can adopt a child, that is, a man and a woman who are married,” Justice Minister Judit Varga said.
Single people will now require special approval from the government to adopt and the constitution now states that parents must raise their children in a conservative spirit.
The restructuring of the constitution has caused a lot of tension in Hungary and dark days are coming for the LGBTQ community.
David Vig, director of Amnesty Hungary said, “This is a dark day for Hungary’s LGBTQ community and a dark day for human rights,”
Masen Davis, Executive Director at Transgender Europe said, “We are deeply concerned for the health and safety of trans children and adults in Hungary in such a hostile climate.”
The new rules have been strongly criticised by rights groups and individuals, who are protesting fighting for their rights, darks days are ahead.
