Iganga- A seven-year-old boy has been confirmed dead and property worth millions destroyed after a fire gutted a boys’ dormitory at Tawheed Primary School in Iganga Town on Friday night.

The fire broke out at around 7.30pm when the pupils had gone out for preps in the next building. By the time the fire brigade arrived about 30 minutes later, most of the property had been burnt.

The pupils told Daily Monitor that the deceased, a Primary One pupil identified as Ashraf Mwima, had remained in the dormitory because he was sick and he could have been asleep when the fire broke out.

“We left him in the dormitory when he was asleep and in a short time we saw fire coming out of the windows,” one of the pupils said.

The boy’s charred remains were found in a plastic basin where it is suspected that he tried to hide in order to escape the fire.

Property, including beddings, scholastic materials, pocket money and clothes were burnt.
Police suspect that the fire was caused by a short circuit.

“The fire started around the sockets and we suspect that it was caused by a short circuit, but investigations are ongoing,” the district police commander, Mr Herbert Nuwagaba, said.- Monitor
