The Zimbabwe National Water Authority (ZINWA) has revealed that major dams in various provinces have registered a significant increase in water levels, as a result of rains being received in the second half of the 2019 to 2020 cropping season.
Some of the dams that registered a notable increase during the past week are Lower Umguza, Lungwala, Chesa, Nyadire, Biri, Antelope, Silalabuhwa, Tugwi Mukosi, Gwenoro, Sabakwe, and Mamina, among others.
“Owing to the rains being received, the development has boosted water security for irrigation and domestic water supply.
As of February 18, 2020, the dam levels average has risen to 54.7 percent,” said ZINWA spokesperson, Marjorie Munyonga.
According to the United Nations’s Inter Governmental Panel on Climate Change, southern Africa is warming at about twice the global rate and is set to become drier with frequent droughts and increased number of heatwaves.
