“Homosexual people have a right to be in a family, he said in the documentary.
“They are children of God and have a right to a family. Nobody should be thrown out or made miserable over it.What we have to create is a civil union law .That way they are legally covered.”
He said that although he opposed same-sex marriages on his time as Archbishop of Buenos Aires, he supported legal protections for these couples.
The Pope’s biographer told BBC that he was not surprised by the Pope’s comments.
“Respect for homosexual persons cannot lead in any way to approval of homosexual behavior or legal recognition of homosexual unions,” said the Vatican’s doctrinal body.
His first vocal backing of these unions will undoubtedly be met with backlash from the conservatives.
In the past the Pope is said equating same-sex relationships to heterosexual marriages would be ‘anthropological regression’.
