Latest news on the missing Malaysia Airlines flight suggests that the plane was “thrown around like a fighter jet” in a bid to dodge radar detection soon after its disappearance, Malaysian military investigators now believe.
According to an unnamed source cited by The Sunday Times added that officials are now believe that the plane was “flown very low at a very high speed”.
The source concluded: “And it was being flown to avoid radar.”
There is a possibility that the flight surged to 45,000 feet – 10,000 above its normal cruising altitude of 35,000 feet – after disappearing, before dropping to as low as 5000 feet, reports by investigators have suggested.
Malaysia’s New Straits Times newspaper previously reported that co-pilot Fariq Abdul Hamid tried to make a mid-flight phone call shortly before the plane disappeared, this fits in well with the plane being flown at low altitude.
The plane would have flown under 7000 feet in order for a phone signal to have reached the telecommunications tower close to the Malaysian city of Penang.
Malaysian Defence Minister and acting Transport Minister Hishammuddin Hussein has since refuted this report arguing that if this were true he would have been notified about the phone call.
Pings from the blackbox were last heard on April 8 and the batteries of the blackbox are believed to have died down by now.
A robotic submersible is expected to be sent down the ocean bed to scour for wreckage and this operation could take as much as two months.
The search area has been narrowed down to a 500-square-mile patch of the seabed just about the size of Los Angeles.
