Miss Namibia to March on Despite Miss World disappointment.
When Paulina Malulu, Miss Namibia 2013, jetted off to Bali for the Miss World 2013 pageant she was full of hope and ready for the experience. However, the lanky beautician failed to make the cut and fell short of whatever the judges were looking for.
This has, however, not broken Paulina, who is determined to continue her philanthropic duties during her year of reign.
“When I left Namibia, I felt 100% ready to represent Namibia but upon arriving, I realised that being ready was not enough. I had a lot of ups and downs but they taught me to be patient, hopeful and tolerant,” said Paulina.
She describes her experience as a great one and used the opportunity to promote her country. Apart from the hard work during the pageant, the 1,75m tall beauty said she made new friendships, notably with Miss Nepal whom she hopes to keep contact with and work with on future charitable work.
Being a seasoned participant in pageants, the Miss World experience was a challenge to Paulina as the rules and judging aren’t what she was used to.
“Miss World is different because it has lots of criteria which are not found in typical beauty contests. Needless to say, I found it very difficult to understand what they were looking for in order to be appreciated by the judges. I think that demography, economics and luck play a big role in this pageant”, says Paulina.
She does, however, commend the charitable arm of the Miss World pageant which raises thousands of dollars for charity every year.
This she says, was what excited her the most about her participation in the pageant. Like many other Miss Namibia title holders over the last couple of years, Paulina failed to make a lasting impression on the judges, and she walked away without making it even to the top ten.
She admits that she was disappointed but insists that she did her best.
“I would lie if I say that I was not disappointed. Of course I was very disappointed, but I already saw it coming because I did not even qualify in any of the fast track events.”
“I felt that I did my best in all of the events, but it is a pity that one cannot get a score if they did not make it into shortlisted finalists in every event,” she said.
This year’s event, held on September 28 saw Miss Philippines, Megan Young walking away with the coveted crown. Coming in as first princess is Marine Lorphelin of France, with the second princess honours going to Carranza Shooter of Ghana.
