Harare, Zimbabwe (News Of The South) -A new dawn for the biggest opposition party in Zimbabwe, Movement for Democratic Change as they have concluded their fifth elective congress which was held in the city of Progress Gweru. It was a long night Sunday as the lack of electricity plunged the stadium in darkness. Such a hiccup, as expected, slowed the voting process for the party organisers who were prompted into running around organising generators to power the venue. Vote counting was concluded this morning and the results are as follows;
President Nelson Chamisa
Vice Presidents, Welshman Ncube, Tendai Biti, Lynette Kore
Treasurer General David Coltart
Chairperson Thabitha Khumalo
Deputy Chair Job Sikhala
Secretary General Charlton Hwende
Youth Chairperson Tererai Sithole
Vice Youth chairperson Cecilia Chimbiri
Woman’s assembly Chairperson Paurina Mpariwa
Woman’s assembly Secretary General Vimbai Tsvangirai
The successful candidates took to the social media and several platforms, thanking their supporters. They expressed their gratitude for the trust bestowed upon them through such remarkable support. Member of Parliament for Kuwadzana East Constituency, Charlton Hwende tweeted,
“Thank you MDC Family for a wonderful congress, thank you our delegates for the trust.”
Though many expressed their joy in his appointment, his critics warned him that he should now be careful with what he tweets from now on, as his tweets now reflect the views of the whole party since he has become the Secretary General.
The Member of Parliament has been heavily criticised in the past due to some of his insensitive remarks which he has since deleted. Hopefully this appointment will help him grow as an individual as he now carries the party’s weight on his shoulders so that he doesn’t repeat his past mistakes.
One of the founding members of the MDC, David Coltart also expressed his gratitude saying, “I am grateful for the amazing support shown to me this weekend by the MDC. I am honoured and let it be said somewhat daunted by the trust placed in me in electing me Treasure General.”
He echoed his sentiments in a recent interview, were he thanked the MDC family and promised to unlock new ways of funding the party and also to be accountable.
The incoming Woman’s Assembly Chairperson promised to fight for gender equality and inclusion of women in bigger roles within the Party. Paurina Mpariwa said in the next coming national elections we should expect to see more women campaigning to be members of parliament.
After the electoral proceedings the party then presented its resolutions from the just ended National Congress. Congress resolves that the party must urgently implement measures to address and resolve the national crisis. The measures include;
1) Strengthening, modernisation and rejuvenation of the Party.
2) Defending and protecting the people of Zimbabwe through proactive processes of engagement that include the exercise of the people’s constitutional right to petition and protest.
3) Providing effective leadership in the zones controlled by the party including Parliament and local authority.
4) Implementation and pursuit of the reform agenda on areas that affect the national question including political reform and corruption.
5) The pursuit of genuine inclusive national dialogue to actualise the reform agenda through an inclusive framework or transitional mechanism.
