Soweto, South Africa (News Of The South) – Violence has erupted in some parts of Soweto, south of Johannesburg.

At least 68 people were arrested for looting foreign-owned shops.

Police say the looting was sparked by a shooting of a 14-year-old teenager earlier this week.

A Somali shop owner reportedly fired at a group that alleged to rob his store, killing the teenager and ,injuring another

Police managed to escort some foreign shop owners to safety.

Three Somali nationals were arrested for being in possession of three unlicensed firearms and fake South African identity documents.

Meanwhile a 74-year-old well known man known as Madala or old man was brutally murdered in his sleep.

Madala, who lived in the township for many years was partially blind.

Some of the residents spoke fondly of the Malawian house shop owner, saying he was a good man who lived alone.

All he had, they say, was his small shop, where he sold paraffin, sweets and some biscuits..

Some locals say there is no space for foreign-owned shops in Soweto, particularly after the shooting of the teenage boy earlier this week.

Many say the foreign shop owners are killing their business because they sell their goods cheaper than the standard normal prices.
