LIVERPOOL, UK  ( News of The South) – In an unprecedented and deeply emotional move, Liverpool Football Club has announced the permanent retirement of the number 20 shirt across all levels, from the men’s and women’s first teams to the Academy. This historic decision serves as a lasting tribute to the beloved Portuguese forward, Diogo Jota, who tragically passed away on July 3, 2025, alongside his brother, André Silva, in a car accident in Spain.

The announcement, made after close consultation with Jota’s wife, Rute, and his family, marks the first time in Liverpool’s 133-year history that a shirt number has been retired. It reflects not only the immense contribution Jota made on the pitch during his five years at Anfield but also the profound personal impact he had on his teammates, colleagues, and the millions of supporters worldwide.

“It was the number he wore with pride and distinction, leading us to countless victories in the process – and Diogo Jota will forever be Liverpool Football Club’s number 20,” read a statement from the club. Michael Edwards, FSG CEO of Football, emphasized the unique nature of this honour, stating, “I believe this is the first time in Liverpool Football Club’s history that such an honour has been bestowed upon an individual. Therefore, we can say this is a unique tribute to a uniquely wonderful person.”

Jota, who joined Liverpool in 2020, quickly became a fan favourite with his electrifying performances and crucial goals. His knack for cutting inside and delivering decisive strikes, often accompanied by the chant of “Ohhh, he wears the number 20…”, etched him into the hearts of the Anfield faithful. Poignantly, he wore the number 20 as Liverpool secured their 20th league title in the 2024-25 season, a symmetry that resonated deeply with supporters. His final goal for the club, a memorable strike in the Merseyside derby in April 2025, sealed a victory that contributed to that historic triumph.

The news of Jota’s passing sent shockwaves through the footballing world, and tributes poured in from across the globe. Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk, who carried a floral number 20 shirt at Jota’s funeral in Gondomar, Portugal, encapsulated the sentiment of the squad by calling him “a champion forever, number 20 forever.”

By retiring the number, Liverpool ensures that Diogo Jota’s legacy will be eternally remembered and associated with the club. It is a testament to a player who embodied the spirit of Liverpool – fierce, talented, and deeply connected to his club and its supporters. As the club moves forward, the absence of the number 20 on the pitch will serve as a constant, poignant reminder of a truly special individual.
