Legalise Commercial Sex Work: Zim Health Minister
Richmore Tera.
Harare. (News Of The South) – Zimbabwe’s Minister of Health and Child Care, Dr David Parirenyetwa has caused a furore in the country following the remarks he made during the Ministers’ Roundtable segment of the just-ended Sanganai/ Hlanganani World Travel Expo, that the Government should seriously consider legalising commercial sex work.
The health minister was part of a panel of tourism ministers from Mozambique, South Africa, Zambia, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Zimbabwe who were taking in the discussion whose aim was to come up with ways of boosting regional tourism.
Sanganai / Hhlanganani World Travel Expo was held in Harare and it ran from June 18-20.
Minister Parirenyatwa was sitting on the panel as the only minister of health after his counterpart in cabinet, Engineer Walter Mzembi – who is the Zimbabwean Minister of Tourism and Hospitality Industries – had invited him to speak on how the Ebola virus scare at one time affected the Zimbabwean tourism industry.
“In some countries commercial sex work is legalalised and it contributes to the country’s economy. Some people come from as far Europe not only to visit the country but for sex. Commercial sex work can be part of the local tourism and you may want to think about it as the ministry of tourism.
“Commercial sex work is as old as the Bible itself so you may have to want to think about it (legalising the trade),” he said.
Dr Parirenyatwa also noted that if Bibles were placed in hotel rooms, the same could be done with condoms.
“I know that Zimbabwe is a Christian nation, but we also need to see condoms being placed in hotel rooms, not necessarily inside the Bible but besides it and it works,” he said.
The minister also said cabinet was considering introducing what it termed as ‘medical tourism’ which he says would see some resort areas like Victoria Falls getting infrastructure that would go a long way in boosting medical treatment among visiting tourists and people in general.
“Medical tourism will see places like the Victoria Falls acting as ideal retreats for people to recuperate in. These will need well-trained personnel and state-of-the-art medical facilities installed there and these include surgeries,” Dr Parirenyatwa said.
