HARARE, Zimbabwe (News of The South) – – In a powerful address delivered in Leicester, the revered King Munhumutapa of Zimbabwe has called upon African Presidents to adopt a more assertive and confident stance when engaging with global leaders. His Majesty emphasized the enduring impact of colonialism on the African continent, urging leaders to never forget this historical context in their diplomatic interactions.

King Munhumutapa’s remarks come against a backdrop of perceived slights towards African leaders on the international stage. He pointed to the widely reported treatment of South African President Cyril Ramaphosa during a visit to Washington, where he was reportedly “reduced” by US President Donald Trump. Sources suggest President Trump’s demeanor and focus on contentious domestic issues during the meeting did not align with the expected protocol for a head of state visit, sparking concerns about the respect afforded to African leaders.

Drawing a stark contrast, King Munhumutapa encouraged African Presidents to emulate the “dance” of the late Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe. While Mugabe’s legacy remains complex and controversial, he was often seen as a figure who projected strength and defiance on the international stage, particularly in his interactions with Western powers. The King’s reference to Mugabe’s “dance” is interpreted as a call for African leaders to be unwavering in their principles and to demand respect in their dealings with their global counterparts.

“African leaders must not forget the colonialism and effects of colonialism which are still being felt by Africans,” King Munhumutapa asserted. He underscored the importance of remembering the historical injustices and the ongoing socio-economic challenges that are a direct consequence of colonial rule. This historical awareness, he argued, should fuel a sense of purpose and determination in African leaders as they navigate international relations.

Furthermore, King Munhumutapa stressed the critical need for unity amongst African nations. He encouraged countries to be supportive of one another, both within the continent and in their engagements on the global stage. This unified front, he suggested, would amplify Africa’s voice and strengthen its negotiating power in international forums.
The King’s intervention resonates with ongoing discussions about Africa’s role in the evolving global landscape. There is a growing sentiment among many Africans that the continent should move beyond a position of dependence and assert its agency in international affairs. King Munhumutapa’s call for boldness and unity is likely to be seen as a significant contribution to this discourse, urging leaders to act with conviction and a strong sense of historical consciousness.

It remains to be seen how African Presidents will respond to this urging. However, King Munhumutapa’s words serve as a potent reminder of the historical context that shapes Africa’s present and the importance of projecting strength and unity as the continent strives for a more equitable and respected position in the world.
