Kenyan Deputy President William Ruto is facing trial for allegations of forming a personal army “ to go to war for him” during Kenya`s elections in 2007.
Ruto being trialed by the International Crimminal Court (ICC) denies the charges of crimes against humanity that took place soon after the 2007 elections.
It is believed that Ruto spent 18 months planning the violence, according to the prosecution.
During the opening stages of the trial in Netherlands, Ruto is said to have smiled as he denied the charges.
Ruto together with Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta are accused of planning and instigating violence which led to the death of more than 1200 people and left about 600 000 people homeless.
During Kenya`s elections in 2007 Ruto and Kenyatta were on opposing sides but are believed to have united under the alliance that brought them to power in the 2013 elections.
Last week the Kenyan Parliament passed a vote for the country to leave the ICC. This move would make Kenya the first nation to rescind its membership.
Karim Khan the defence lawyer acting on behalf of Ruto said: “We say that there is a rotten underbelly of this case that the prosecutor has swallowed hook, line and sinker, indifferent to the truth, all too eager to latch on to any… story that somehow ticks the boxes that we have to tick to support charges”.
The violence which caused a lot of damage in Kenya only stopped after the intervention of international diplomats when former UN Secretary General Koffi Annan mediated.
