Harare, Zimbabwe (News of the South)-A recent article by the Herald congratulating Zimbabwe Tourism Authority CEO Karikoga Kaseke after he was awarded an Honorary Doctorate in Public Adminstration has been dismissed as a sick and poor PR stunt by Prof Jonathan Moyo.
The sloshy superlative-laced piece is astounding in its unhidden vanity and intent to coat Kaseke with patronizing praise that goes beyond the mere happening of his being granted the Doctorate.
The writer of the article cannot help himself but betray his over-eager impulse to lavish Kaseke with every other flowery confetti and positive attitudinal anecdote he can muster.
This has led Higher Education Minister Moyo to dismiss the piece scoffing at its laudatory antics that border on the comedic.
“Commonwealth University honours Kaseke. The Herald pathetic PR for a phony degree”, scoffed Moyo on Twitter.
Kaseke was conferred the doctorate by the Commonwealth University in conjunction with London Graduate School in recognition of his ‘achievements in the field of tourism’.
According to a citation of the doctorate it is given to those who have “distinguished themselves in society through service, selflessness and other outstanding contributions through which the lives of many have been touched positively”
The Herald however does the award a great disservice by going to unrequired lengths to laud Kaseke in ways that defy the gratuitous nature of the award with the writer taking much pain to draw attention to his personal familiarity with Kaseke.
Amongst some uncalled for venerations the article lauds Kaseke as working “like a donkey”; “what he touches works”; ”he never tires’.
The article tries to build a superman image of a man who literally never sleeps, never tires and never fades whilst working but ends up sounding overdone and unpalatable to logic.
At the end of the article one is left weighted with the premonition that Kaseke is being sold to the public or some reader for a coming appointment or something that needs his great work ethic be known publicly.
