HARARE – Japan has given Zimbabwe a US$2.7 million (300 Japanese Yen) grant to be used for the provision of medical and hospital equipment for Harare Children’s Hospital.

At the signing ceremony of the Exchange of Notes for the procurement of the hospital equipment, Ncube said government has embarked on a 90-day Rapid Plan which will focus on urgent and immediate requirements of Harare Hospital.

Treasury has since allocated US$5 million towards the cause, he said.

“We are committed to full re-engagement with Japan as well as all developmental partners in order to unlock new financial assistance,” he said.

Ambassador of Japan to Zimbabwe, Toshiyuki Iwado said the grant aid will fulfil basic human needs and contribute to the economic and social development of the country.

“Since it is not accompanied by an obligation for repayment, grant aid is extremely advantageous for the recipient country and does not cause any burden on its fiscal discipline,” he said.

Harare Hospital is one of the largest hospitals in Zimbabwe, with a total bed capacity of 350 and an average of 10 000 children admitted annually. A further 45 000 children receive services as outpatients.
