BIRMINGHAM, UK — Zimbabwean musician David Hondoyedzomba, popularly known as HD, is preparing to make his highly anticipated United Kingdom debut when he performs at the SAMA Festival tomorrow at The Hangar in Birmingham alongside fellow artist Blackways. The performance marks a significant milestone in HD’s two-decade musical journey and represents a fresh chapter for the singer, who has built a loyal following in Zimbabwe through his distinctive sound, which he describes as “HD Music” — a unique blend of Afro-pop infused with Zimbabwean influences.
Speaking exclusively to News of The South, HD revealed that despite his extensive experience on stage, he is feeling a level of nervousness he has not experienced in years.
“I am excited and honoured to play at SAMA Festival. I have stage fright that I have never had for the last 10 years, and I am having it now. It’s the idea that I am performing with a new band in the UK. Unlike in Zimbabwe, in the UK it’s a new, fresh start.”
He added:
“People can expect fireworks, brand new music, brand new artists — something of my own, something that says David Hondoyedzomba.”
HD’s newly assembled UK-based band features an ensemble of predominantly male musicians alongside one female member. The group has spent weeks rehearsing in preparation for what promises to be an energetic and memorable performance.
“We have been doing rehearsals, gearing up for SAMA Festival,” he said.
The artist is inviting music lovers across the United Kingdom to attend the festival and experience his original sound first-hand.
“To the UK fans who don’t know me, I have to say: come out in large numbers to experience something original and unique. You will not regret it. There will be a touch of old-school Zimbabwean classics, and you will not be disappointed.”
Festival-goers can expect performances of some of HD’s popular tracks, including Hauite and Baba Munenge Rombe, the latter featuring renowned Zimbabwean artists Sulu Chimbetu and Marecovery.
HD has been involved in music since 1997, giving him nearly 30 years of experience in the industry. Over the years, he has developed a reputation for his versatility, stage presence and commitment to creating a sound that blends contemporary Afro-pop with Zimbabwean musical traditions. His career has seen him collaborate with established musicians and build a catalogue of songs that resonate with audiences across generations. Through his signature “HD Music” style, he continues to push creative boundaries while maintaining strong ties to his Zimbabwean roots.
Tomorrow’s appearance at the SAMA Festival will be his first-ever performance in the United Kingdom, making it a landmark moment both for the artist and for fans eager to experience his music live. With a mix of fresh material, established favourites and a renewed artistic vision, HD is expected to add a vibrant new flavour to the SAMA Festival line-up. As anticipation builds ahead of the event, all eyes will be on the Birmingham stage as David Hondoyedzomba introduces UK audiences to the sound and spirit of HD Music.
The SAMA Festival will showcase a diverse line-up of Zimbabwean talent, bringing together established and emerging artists for a celebration of music, culture and community in the heart of Birmingham.
Joining HD and Blackways on stage will be popular group Intotal Band, alongside rising performers Young Gemini, Malloti, Hulengende and Madzimai. The eclectic line-up reflects the festival’s commitment to promoting Zimbabwean music across different genres and generations while creating a platform for artists to connect with audiences in the United Kingdom.
Organisers say the festival aims to celebrate Zimbabwean heritage and strengthen cultural ties within the diaspora through live music and entertainment. The event is being promoted by Y2K Entertainment, which has become known for hosting and supporting Zimbabwean cultural events in the UK.
With a packed programme featuring both established names and emerging acts, festival-goers can expect a vibrant atmosphere and a memorable showcase of Zimbabwean talent at The Hangar.
