(News of The South) – Malawian opposition parties are drawing closer in getting a verdict of the 2019 Presidential elections which were held in May.
Following the outcome of the Presidential elections which were won by the incumbent President, Peter Mutharika, United Transformation Movement (UTM) leader Sailors Chilima and Malawi Congress Party (MCP) leader Lazarus Chakwera filed a lobby against the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) for failing to hold the elections in accordance with the country’s Constitution and the Presidential and Parliamentary Elections Act.
Kalekani Kaphale who is representing MEC said, “the trial went on well, we have done our part.” Kephale further said he was optimistic with the outcome of the Constitutional Court’s verdict which is expected to be announced after the final submissions on the 19th of this month.
UTM lawyer, Chikosa Silungwe said the evidence he had tabled was enough to nullify the Presidential elections’ results.
“MEC failed to manage the elections of two fronts which are irregularities and fraud. We have shown how through these irregularities and fraud 1 million votes were affected.”
The Constitutional Court has since adjourned to December 19, 2019 when the lawyers will present their final submissions.
If the judges uphold the fraud allegations, fresh polls could be called within a matter of days. The constitutional court has 45 days to hand down its verdict after the final submissions.
