Thousands of football fans converged the streets of Lisbon and the Estadio da Luz to pay their last respect to Portugal and Benfica legend Eusebio, who passed away on Sunday.

Eusebio’s coffin was wrapped in club’s colours and was transported through the Lisbon streets as part of a funeral cortege before being taken into Estadio da Luz, where supporters chanted the attacker’s name prior to his burial.

The legend died due to heart problems at the weekend, played 300 matches for Portugal outfit and lifted two European cups and helped Portugal to a best-ever third place finish in 1966 World Cup.

Supporters also put shirts around the statue of the Mozambique-born icon which stands outside the stadium as the coffin left the ground for the last time.

Approximately 11,000 fans sang, waved flags as Eusebio’s coffin was taken to the centre circle and placed on golden plinth.

Other football greats took to the social network to bid farewell to Eusebio, with Luis Figo describing him as “The king…the great”, while Cristiano Ronaldo wrote “always eternity”.
