(Zimbabwe) ( News Of The South) – Electoral fraud which is prevalent in a number of sub-Saharan countries, results in poverty, says Zimbabwe`s former Education Minister David Coltart.

Presenting a paper at the “Democratic Elections in Africa: Analysing the Risk of Fraud and Electoral Malpractice” Confernce in Brussels Tuesday, Senator Coltart said countries without transparent electoral systems faced the problem of poverty.

“There is a direct correlation between poverty and huge inequality of wealth in those African countries where their respective ruling classes have governed uniterrupted since the end of colonialism,” said Coltart.

He cited the example of Zimbabwe which used to be the second largest economy in Africa, but was now very poor due largely to electoral fraud which has marred its elections. He said Mauritius had seen remarkable economic growth because the country has a transparent electoral system.

Senator Coltart said electoral fraud helped entrench corruption in a country. “
