A 26-year-old Zimbabwean man, Poslet Mapuranga, has been arrested in South Africa while trying to flee the scene of an armed robbery on foot after abandoning his getaway car, according to the police.

Mapuranga, who is facing a charge of armed robbery, appeared for a bail hearing at the Kimberley magistrates court on Tuesday and was remanded in custody.

South African Police Service (SAPS) spokesperson, Lieutenant MD Mdhluli said Mapuranga and an accomplice still at large allegedly robbed a 34-year-old supermarket owner at 12.30 pm on June 28 in Kimberley’s Square Hill Park.

“It is alleged that two male suspects entered the shop, wearing balaclava, and demanded cash,” Mdhluli said. “The shopowner was threatened with a firearm. It is alleged that one of the suspects took a cellphone from the complainant whilst the other suspect jumped over
the counter where he took an undisclosed amount of cash.”

Mdhluli said the two suspects left the supermarket and walked to a nearby veld where they had parked their Ford Leisure getaway car. The shopowner pursued them in a pickup truck.

“The complainant allegedly disturbed these suspects by bumping their getaway car from behind. This led them to get out of the vehicle and run on foot. The shopowner cornered one suspect and apprehended him but the other suspect managed to get away,” the SAPS spokesman said.

Mapuranga’s bail application was postponed as an immigration officer who was to give evidence was reported ‘off sick’.
