The country’s vice president who is also United Transformation Movement (UTM) president, Saulos Chilima has dragged President Peter Mutharika to court for failing to comply with the February 3rd Constitutional court order.

Chilima is seeking legal redress in the Lilongwe High Court on the failure by Mutharika to comply with the court ruling which among others ordered parliament to discuss whether Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) commissioners led by Dr. Jane Ansah should have the mandate to preside over the 2020 presidential elections.

Meanwhile, Chlima’s legal council led by Dr. Chikosa Silungwe has obtained an injunction restraining MEC from presiding over the forthcoming elections.

According to Silungwe, “the court is expected to meet on Thursday morning (today) to give determination on the prospects of the case”.

There has been a huge outcry from various electoral stakeholders on the possibility of Ansah and her commissioners running the July 2nd 2020 presidential election, many arguing the rationale behind the move.
Mutharika returned to parliament all the recommendations it made as regards to the electoral reforms including the famous 50+1 bill.

Meanwhile, parliament has confirmed having received the bills Mutharika returned and it is yet to meet and discuss the way forward on the rejected amendments.
