Former Zimbabwe Football Association Chief executive officer Henrietta Rushwaya is set to spend the weekend behind bars.
Magistrate Ngoni Nduna indicated that Rushwaya should be jointly charged together with her four other accomplices.
The other accused include Ali Mohammed, a member of the Central Intelligence Organisation, Stephen Tserayi, Rafios Mufandauya and Gift Karanda.
The latter were later arrested Thursday. Rushwaya allegedly smuggled gold worth more than US$333 000 to Dubai. Contrary to submissions earlier brought before the courts. prosecutors yesterday made an about-turn and applied to withdraw their consent for bail for Rushwaya.
They had agreed to $90 000 plus the surety of title deeds to her lawyer’s Borrowdale property.
Rushwaya is not new to controversy as she was once implicated in the famous Asia-gate scandal.
The matches which were in question occurred between August 2007 and January 2010. The majority of the matches took place in Asia, but they were not just confined to that continent. Matches against at least 11 different countries are suspected to have been fixed, including those of the Warriors against Bulgaria, China, Jordan and Singapore.
Furthermore, the now defunct 2008 PSL champions, Monomotapa United, were discovered to have attempted to fix African Champions League matches, as well as having impersonated the national side and fixing matches against Malaysia.
The scandal erupted after an investigation by the Sports and Recreation Commission into the question of why the national side had toured Malaysia in 2009 without having received official authorisation from the Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA).
The series of fixed defeats caused Zimbabwe’s world ranking to plummet to as low as 130. However, a number of the players, officials and administrators were lining theuir own pockets, receiving up to $5,000 for each match lost.
