While we are all fans of the modern Olympics, it is important to remember that these games can trace their roots back to ancient Greece. In fact, modern scholars believe that the Olympics have been continually practised in one form or another for an incredible 1,503 years. This is why we were all severely disappointed to learn that the 2020 Tokyo games had been postponed. Although quite understandable when we take into account the present global situation, we have to wonder whether or not further delays can be expected? Let’s take a pragmatic look at the answer to this question in order to be prepared for what is in store.

What Was the Rationale Behind Postponing the Olympics?

From a certain point of view, one would have had imagined that cancelling the 2020 games was a simple decision. However, we need to take into account the fact that Tokyo authorities had already invested billions into providing infrastructure, stadiums, accommodations, and similar necessities. This is why officials had to weigh all of their options extremely carefully.

To be sure, such a decision was not an easy one to make. The most obvious reason why experts opted for a cautious approach was to prevent the further spread of any illnesses. The second driving factor involved the sheer numbers associated with global travel. Millions of fans from across the world were expected to attend the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. Not only would they spread the illness within the city itself, but they could further infect their own countries upon returning home. To put it simply, logic prevailed and the event organisers listened to global health experts. This is why many
authoritative Olympic previews will need to be updated.

Is 2021 Already Being Cast in Doubt?

As we can see from above, it seems as if cancelling the 2020 games was indeed the most logical step. This is when things may get a bit interesting.the statistics in regards in regards to teams and competitors may still be valid, the same cannot be said for what to expect in 2021. In fact, recent statements suggest that even the 2021 games could once again be postponed. This would represent an unprecedented situation and organisers will only make a future decision based off of rock-solid evidence.

The primary problem is that there are entirely too many “nuts and bolts” involved with scheduling such an event when so many unknowns are still present. This makes logistical planning all but impossible at an early stage. Furthermore, the preferences of Tokyo residents also needs to be addressed. A recent survey suggested that they are averse to having the games held in their city during 2021 (likely due to fears of a viral resurgence). Not only will officials have to content with global health issues, but they could very well be dealing with an extremely hostile home environment.

Only time will tell if the Olympics may be held in 2021. Let us continue to remain positive and to hope that things steadily improve with time and patience.
